AVIATION in LINCOLNSHIRE

For all things related to other aviation in Lincolnshire, including aircraft, airfields, crash sites and memorials a good starting point is the Bomber County Aviation Research pages (over 200 of them).

Bomber Command
The International Bomber Command Centre on a hillside overlooking Lincoln is centred around a Memorial Spire, commemorating almost 58,000 RAF personnel (including those from other countries) who lost their lives serving with the Command. Not only worth a visit (by pre-booking at present), their website gives access to a Digital Archive (compiled by the University of Lincoln) that includes Veteran interviews and the Losses Database.

AIRCREW and PERSONNEL

The Commnwealth War Graves Commission honour and care for the 1.7 million men and women of Commonwealth forces who died in the two World Wars. Their website not only provides a useful guide to memorials, cemeteries and final resting places of air force personnel, but often details individual family backgrounds or hometowns of those killed in action.

Several other websites also commemorate War Dead, often on a national basis. These include an online Roll of Honour covering all conflicts involving Australians on the Virtual War Memorial Australia, New Zealand also has an Online Cenotaph, hosted by the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

The latter has useful navigational links and biographical information for some entries. However, a word of caution – searching either of these sites may give inaccurate or incomplete information (or did when first visited a year or two back) and can be quirky.

The Aircrew Remembered site can be daunting at first sight. It includes numerous personal histories, more than two dozen separate databases and plethora of other information. It is possible to spend hours browsing and become spellbound by the detail but, if time is limited, use of the Advanved Search feature is recommended(!).

NOTE: Details of sources for Personnel Records are included on the Records & Archives page.
